Germany - Hamburg Mint Description

The Hamburg Mint (Hamburgische Münze)
Source: muenzehamburg.de

The Hamburg Mint (Hamburgische Münze) has been producing coinage since the 9th century and is thus the oldest coin-minting site in Germany. As one of the five state-owned mints, the Hamburg Mint now produces a proportion of all the Euro coins for the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as foreign currencies, special coins, collectors’ coins and medals.

The first coin minted in Hamburg is dated to 834. Even today, minting of coins is a public duty and one of the most exclusive duties of the Hamburg mint is the minting of the Euro coins for the Federal Republic of Germany with the identification mark ‘J’.
