The Benjamin Franklin "Scientist" Silver Dollar was one of two commemorative coins issued to celebrate the tercentenary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin, one of this Nation’s original scientists, thinkers and founding fathers. Proceeds from the sale of Franklin coins went to benefit of the Franklin Institute.
The obverse was designed by Norman E. Nemeth and features a representation of Benjamin Franklin’s famous kite experiment, the phrase “BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SCIENTIST: and the dual date “1706-2006”. Next to Franklin's right foot are the designer's initials “NEN”. Below the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST” is the the mintmark “P” for Philadelphia.
The reverse was designed by Charles L. Vickers and features Benjamin Franklin’s "Join, or Die" cartoon, published in the Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. In the bottom right of the design are the designer's initials “CLV”.
